Thank God for Peter Kramer. This is a must read for anyone with doubts about the efficacy of antidepressants.

  1. I agree that the NY Times article was excellent. I am a clinical neurologist. I am very judicious and selective in prescribing any medication. But anti-depressants, both the older tricyclics and the newer more selective medications, can be extremely helpful. As that article pointed out, the antidepressants may have a significant role in promoting recovery after certain types of brain injuries such as what happens in stroke.

    Of course there can be side effects. Also, not everyone needs them. But the people who disparage this important type of medication do a terrible disservice to humanity.
