Amid reports of weeks elapsing before veterans are able to begin mental health treatment, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced Thursday an immediate, nearly 10% increase in mental health staffing across the country, adding 1,900 therapists and other workers.
This is really great news for veterans and all of us who care about them, and I believe it is the direct result of Nicholas Kristof’s heart-breaking story in last Sunday’s New York Times. It’s about the suicide of a young solider just back from Iraq: A Veteran’s Death, A Nation’s Shame, from his grieving mom’s perspective.
